The result is a remarkable EPA-estimated 5.3 L/100km on the highway and a vehicle that uses fuel when you need it, and preserves it when you don’t.
2. Regenerative Braking
There’s no need to ever think about charging the lithium-ion battery. eAssist features regenerative braking that captures power normally lost during coasting or braking, converts it to electricity and stores it for when it’s needed, helping keep the lithium-ion battery charged and off your to-do list.
3. Lithium-Ion Battery Pack
How do you power a battery without charging it? It’s simple: Just drive and in certain scenarios the lithium-ion battery stores energy to keep charged. That energy is later used to deliver an electric boost to the engine during heavy acceleration or climbing a grade. And while the vehicle is at a stop, the engine shuts off and the battery-powered motor-generator unit powers accessories, preserving fuel so it can be used later.

5. 15 kW Motor-Generator Unit
Owning the 2013 Malibu Eco means you get a smarter drive. When the car is stopped, it automatically switches from using gas to energy from the lithium-ion battery. The motor-generator unit brings the engine to a smooth stop and prepares it for a seamless start when the brake pedal is released. Drivers wouldn’t notice the transition if it weren’t for the integrated high-resolution full-color Driver Information Center and 7-inch diagonal touch-screen that display when the battery is supporting the powertrain.
Safety
Before
Protection is great, but prevention is better. The 2013 Malibu was designed with that in mind, offering technologies that can help avoid collisions altogether including 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, traction control and the StabiliTrak® Electronic Stability Control System. There's also the available Lane Departure Warning that lets you know when you're wandering from your lane without using your turn signal (above 25 mph), and available advanced Forward Collision Alert that signals, when you're rapidly approaching a vehicle, that a collision may become imminent.

In the event of a collision, Malibu is equipped to help protect you and your passengers. For the first time, Malibu now includes 10 airbags including knee air bags for the driver and front passenger. Structural integrity of the vehicle is important during a collision and Malibu provides an extremely strong, stiff body and an ultra-high-strength steel safety cage, along with rollover protection.

Every Malibu offers the security of OnStar® with Automatic Crash Response, standard for the first six months. Built-in sensors can automatically alert an OnStar Advisor who is immediately connected to you through your vehicle to see if you need help sent to your exact location — even if you can’t respond.
